🛡️ Rules for Safe Play
Most injuries in pickleball happen from falls or collisions. Follow these "Golden Rules of Safety" to stay on the court.
Never Run Backwards: This is the #1 cause of head injuries and broken wrists. If a ball is lobbed over your head, turn around and run forward toward the baseline, then look back over your shoulder.
The "Ball!" Call: If a ball rolls onto your court from an adjacent game, anyone should yell "Ball on court!" immediately. Stop play instantly—do not try to finish the point.
Check the Surface: Never play on a wet or damp court. To test, press your toe down and twist; if it leaves a "wet" mark or feels slick, it is unsafe.
Partner Communication: Use loud calls like "Mine!" or "Yours!" to avoid paddle clashes or running into your partner.
Hydration & Heat: Drink water before you feel thirsty. If you feel dizzy, nauseous, or stop sweating, exit the court immediately to a shaded area.
🎒 Equipment Use & Maintenance
Proper gear isn't just about performance—it's your first line of defense against injury.

Safety/Care Guideline
Footwear
Wear court-specific shoes (tennis or pickleball) for lateral support. Running shoes are designed for forward motion and significantly increase the risk of ankle rolls.
Paddles
Inspect for hairline cracks or "dead spots" (dull sound when tapped). A damaged paddle can cause vibrations that lead to "tennis elbow." Wipe the face with a damp microfiber cloth; never use harsh chemicals.
Eye Protection
Highly recommended, especially in doubles play. Protective eyewear can prevent serious injury from high-speed balls or accidental paddle hits.
Balls
Check for cracks or an "out-of-round" shape. Cracked balls travel unpredictably and should be discarded immediately.
🚑 Emergency Procedures
In the event of an injury or medical emergency, follow these steps to manage the scene effectively.
Immediate Response (The "RICE" Method)
For minor sprains or strains, use the Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation method. Most facilities have instant cold packs in their first-aid kits.
Serious Medical Emergencies (Cardiac/Severe Falls)
Call 911 Immediately: Do not wait for a supervisor if someone collapses or has trouble breathing.
Clear the Court: All nearby games must stop to provide space for responders.
Pro Tip: Keep a laminated card in your pickleball bag with your emergency contact's name and any critical medical info (like allergies or heart conditions).
